Know your shutoffs: water, gas and power
Finding them before an emergency saves the most damage.
Main water shutoff
Usually where the water line enters the house: basement, crawl space, garage or utility closet, or near the meter. Turn clockwise to close. Test it once a year.
Fixture shutoffs
Under sinks, behind toilets and at the water heater. Close these first for a leak at one fixture.
Gas
If you smell gas, don't try to shut it off. Leave and call your gas utility from outside.
Electrical panel
Label the breakers for the furnace, water heater, sump pump and wet areas. Only switch breakers from a dry spot.
